History of Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer
Rocky Mountaineer is a privately owned passenger rail service that offers 45 unique Canadian vacation packages – including four distinctive rail journeys – throughout British Columbia and Alberta. Over the last 20 year Rocky Mountaineer has brought travellers luxurious daylight train journeys throughout the magnificent Canadian West. It is said to be one of the best ways to experience the imposing North’s rugged beauty.
Their inaugural trip in 1990 was quickly named “The World’s 20 Best Rail Experiences” by The International Railway Traveller magazine and has since gone on to win a number of other accolades.
Launching their GoldLeaf service in 95’ which gives passengers a 360 degree view thanks to the glass topped double-decker trains, Rocky Mountaineer has had an influx of customers.
The viewing cars create a unique and unrestricted view of the country and have become extremely popular as a result. They catered for this added business by increasing the number of cars they had per train. In doing so they set records for the longest passenger train in Canada in 96’ and again in 99’ with 37 and 41 cars respectively. There long cars and great views may be part of the reason that Rocky Mountaineer have been able to transport over one million customers since its inception in 95’.
After being featured on the BBC’s 50 Things To Do Before You Die Rocky Mountaineer won the “World’s leading Travel Experience by Train” in 2005 at the World Travel Awards –again in 06’ and 07’ – and was named one of the World’s top 25 trains by the Society of International Railway Travellers.
Then in 2006 they launched two new routes: The Whistler Sea to Sky Climb which travels from Vancouver to Whistler and Rainforest to Gold Rush which travels from Whistler to Jasper.
Refreshingly Rocky Mountaineer have a dedication toward sustainability and were awarded British Columbia’s “Foresight Sustainability Award” for leadership and advocacy of sustainable tourism and in recognition of that feet were named one of the “World’s Greatest Trips” by infamous National Geographic.
2008 brought Rocky Mountaineer their one millionth customers and was heralded as a landmark year.
Following that success, one of the four day journeys was featured on ABC’s hit reality show The Bachelorette meaning that the world could enjoy the beautiful train journeys supplied by Rocky Mountaineer from living room couch.
And that brings us to today. Rocky Mountaineer has had a complete rebrand, from the logo to the website and even the names of the routes themselves. The rail cars even got a fresh lick of paint as well. Rocky Mountaineer continue to give people around the world some of the most spectacular views in the world and being the largest privately owned passenger rail service in North-America is well deserve.
